Classic car show benefits West

More than 600 cars were on display Saturday in a parking lot across form the community center in West.

Waco resident Sam Blount has friends who live in West. He said his friends used their contacts with the mayor and mayor pro tem to organize the car show to benefit the town. West is still feeling the effects of the fertilizer plant explosion nearly four months ago.

The car show took place across from the community center on the same property that served as a command post in the aftermath of the explosion.

Blount said the show included classic cars, old trucks, cars from the 1930s and custom cars. He said the cars came from three states, including Oklahoma and Louisiana.

Between two and three thousand people participated in the car show. Blount said five bands performed, there were games for kids and snow cone vendors.

He said there were many donations and people were “giving whatever they wanted.”

He said the event raised $26,000 in six hours.

During Wednesday night’s city council meeting at the community center, a check for the amount of the proceeds was presented to the West City Council.
