Cooper, Elgin gain berths at Belton SQT

The Belton Tigers hosted the 7-on-7 State Qualifier Tournament (SQT) at four sites around the Belton-area on Saturday with two bids on the line for the 2013 State 7-on-7 Region I Tournament in Leander July 12-13. 16 teams participated in the tournament within four pools. Lake Travis, Pflugerville Hendrickson and Belton already gained berths in the state tournament from previous tournaments.

In Pool A played at Tiger Field, Austin Bowie posted a 3-0 record in pool play, with host school Belton finishing second with a 2-1 record, Cedar Creek finishing 1-2 and Waco finishing 0-3. In the first round of the pool, Bowie shut out Waco 61-0 and Belton hammered Cedar Creek 54-12. In the second round, Bowie got past the Tigers 47-27 and Cedar Creek dominated Waco 44-7. In the final pool game Bowie defeated Cedar Creek 40-18 and Belton shut out Waco 52-0. In Pool B played at Wilson Kerzee Field, Lake Travis went 3-0 in pool play, while Elgin went 2-1, Killeen Shoemaker went 1-2 and Copperas Cove went 0-3. In the first round, Lake Travis downed Cove 49-18 and Elgin outgunned Shoemaker 48-41. In the second round, Lake Travis dropped Elgin 35-14 and Shoemaker got by Cove 38-33. In the final pool round, Lake Travis throttled Shoemaker 50-20 and Elgin downed Cove 45-32. Elgin earned the spot in the semi-finals with Lake Travis already having a state berth. In Pool C played at UMHB, Temple finished 3-0 in pool play, Pflugerville Hendrickson went 2-1, Austin Connally went 1-2 and Corsicana went 0-2. In the first round, Connally defeated Corsicana 25-12 and Temple beat Hendrickson 40-20. In the second round, Hendrickson dropped Connally 45-12 and Temple ripped Corsicana 68-28. In the final pool round, Temple thumped Connally 59-33 and Hendrickson beat Corsicana 32-18. In Pool C played at South Belton Middle School, Abilene Cooper finished 3-0 in pool play, Killeen finished 2-1, Vista Ridge went 1-2 and Georgetown went 0-3. In game one, Cooper downed Georgetown 48-21 and Killeen beat Vista Ridge 34-33. In the second round, Cooper beat Killeen 44-34 and Vista Ridge beat Georgetown 33-26. In the final pool round, Cooper beat Vista Ridge 40-12 and Killeen beat Georgetown 40-34. Bowie, Elgin, Temple and Cooper qualified for the semi-finals in the early after noon session at Tiger field. Pool B qualifier Elgin squeaked by Pool A winner Bowie 40-39 to earn a spot in the championship round. Pool D winner Cooper beat Temple 41-27 to earn their spot in the championship game. In the third place game, Temple defeated Bowie 39-26 to take third place overall. In the championship game, defense played a big part on both sides. Cooper edged Elgin 27-26 to win the Belton 7-on-7 SQT title. Both teams earned a bid to the mid-July Region I tourney, joining Belton, Lake Travis and Hendrickson with berths
