The impressive summer workout participation numbers were one of the highlights of the Belton Athletic Advisory Council Meeting held Monday night at South Belton Middle School.

Belton athletic director Rodney Southern informed the attendees at the meeting that in the six weeks of summer workouts overseen by the Belton coaching staff, the program averaged 278 athletes a day during the period. Of the 278 participants, 77 of those were female athletes.

The numbers are even more impressive for enrollment in the upcoming 2013-2014 Belton Athletics season. 1,001 students between Belton Middle School, Lake Belton Middle School and South Belton Middle School are enrolled in athletics. At Belton High School, 954 students are enrolled for sports.

In other news, Southern explained how the first four days of the upcoming Belton Tigers training camp will be held in accordance with UIL guidelines.

“The first four days are classified as acclimation days,” said Southern. “On Monday, practice will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Then we will show film from either 3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and then go through a walk through. On Tuesday, we will hold practice from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. We repeat the two days on Wednesday and Thursday.”

The subject of the recently UIL-mandated 90-minute-per-week contact limit was also discussed in the meeting. The mandate does not include game nights.

Tennis, cross-country and volleyball camps all got underway on Monday morning. Volleyball gets underway this weekend with a Friday night scrimmage against Salado, Saturday scrimmage at Georgetown and regular season match up Monday night against Round Rock Stony Point at Tiger Gym. Tennis gets underway this upcoming Monday in Harker Heights.

The next meeting of the Belton Athletic Advisory Council will be on November 18.
