BHS Swimming sweeps Cedar Park, Temple up next

The Belton High School boys’ and girls’ swimming teams took to the water Friday night against at Cedar Park Timberwolves boys’ and girls’ swimming teams at Roy and Jean Potts Swim Center.
The Lady Tigers defeated the Lady Wolves 155-128 and the Tigers defeated the Wolves 164-103, setting up a head-to-head dual between Belton and Temple Thursday night on campus.
In the Girls 200 yard Medley Relay, Belton’s A relay team (Samantha Pentico, Margaret Murphy, Megan Nitcher and Carissa Basaldua) set a new school record with a time of 1:58.87 in winning the event. Belton’s B relay team (Dezzarae Luera, Alayne Johnson, Courtney Lamm and Savannah Bush) finished a strong third with a time of 2:08.85.
Nitcher won the 200 yard freestyle event with a time of 2:04.99. Margaret Montgomery finished third with a time of 2:09.36 and Jessica Bonner finished fourth with a time of 2:11.22.
Cedar Park swept the top three positions in the 200 individual medley. Lamm was the highest Belton finisher, placing fourth with a time of 2:31.62.
Murphy won her second consecutive 50 yard freestyle event with a time of 26.36. Basaldua finished fifth (26.97) and Katherine Hennessee finished sixth (27.51).
Nitcher won the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.46, with Natalie Hazelwood finishing third (1:05.56), Lamm finishing fourth (1:08.21) and Margueret Betbeze finished fifth (1:16.22).
Murphy won the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 56.37. Mercedes Marcus finished fourth (1:00.17) and Hennessee finished fifth.


The Lady Tigers swept the top three positions in the 500 yard freestyle, with Montgomery winning the event (5:46.26), Bonner finishing second (5:56.47) and Emily Soliz finishing third (5:56.51).
Cedar Park won the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:45.91. Belton’s A relay team (Basaldua, Marcus, Johnson and Hennessee) placed second with a time of 1:50.32, B relay team (Hazelwood, Bonner, Montgomery and Bush) finished third with a time of 1:54.41 and C relay team (Betbeze, Lamm, Audrey Godley and Chalon Fulcher-Waller) finished fifth with a time of 1:58.98.
Pentico finished third in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:09.01, with Luera finishing fourth (1:13.97), Cara Cox finishing fifth (1:14.61) and Haley Taylor finishing sixth (1:15:40).
The Lady Tigers’ Hazelwood (1:14.40) and Basaldua (1:15.19) finished second and third respectively in the 100 yard breaststroke. Hazelwood’s time set a new school record for Belton.
The 400 yard freestyle relay featured four Belton teams. Belton A (Nitcher, Bonner, Montgomery and Murphy) finished second with a time of 3:56.35, Belton B (Hennessee, Marcus, Pentico and Bush) finished third with a time of 4:06.53, Belton C (Betbeze, Taylor, Godley and Rachel Moger) finished fifth with a time of 4:18.87 and Belton D (Cox, Soliz, Luera and Fulcher-Waller) finished sixth with a time of 4:23.43.
On the boys’ side of the ropes, the relay team of Eric Belcher, Andrew Alas, Jake Fitzwater and Troy Morrow edged out Cedar Park’s relay team by .03 seconds for the victory with a time of 1:46.76. The Belton B relay team (Steven Weber, Martin Fluitt, Matthew Phillips and Noeh Varville) placed third with a time of 1:59.82.
Drew Fitzwater picked up the top slot in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.04. Michael McDonald placed third with a time of 2:04.42 and Caleb Ferguson placed fifth with a time of 2:05.05.
Tristan Boss (2:16.39) and Varville (2:33.43) finished third and fourth respectively in the 200 yard indiviual medley.
The Tigers swept the top three positions in the 50 yard freestyle. Morrow topped the field with a time of 23.57 with Brandon Smith finishing second (23.91) and Alas finishing third (24.39).
Jake Fitzwater won the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 56.68. Ferguson finished fourth (1:05.44) and Phillips finished fifth (1:08.73).
Smith, Boss and McDonald placed second through fourth in the 100 yard freestyle. Smith swam a time of 52.90, Boss swam a time of 54.76 and McDonald finished with a time of 55.90.
Morrow narrowly edged Drew Fitzwater in the 500 yard freestyle. Morrow’s 5:09.52 outlasted the freshman’s 5:10.28. Casey Starnes (5:52.91) and Varville (6:01.34) also had strong finishes for Belton, placing fourth and fifth.
Belton A (Smith, McDonald, Alas and Drew Fitzwater) took the 200 yard relay event with a time of 1:37.88. Cedar Park (1:41.63) barely nipped Belton B (Boss, Jake Fitzwater, Ferguson and Phillips) for second place, as the Tigers finished with a time of 1:41.93.
The Tigers’ finished second through fourth in the 100 yard backstroke. Belcher (1:01.34), Jake Fitzwater (1:01.62) and Weber (1:04.61) all swam strong in the event.
Alas won the 100 breaststroke event with a time of 1:05.91. Fluitt finished fifth with a time of 1:18.52.
The boys’ 400 yard freestyle relay was won by the Timberwolves with a time of 3:29.20. Belton A (Morrow, Drew Fitzwater, McDonald and Smith) took second with a time of 3:31.24 and Belton B (Belcher, Boss, Ferguson and Weber) took third with a time of 3:54.34.
