Lady Tigers down Temple again 4-1
Wednesday, 29 February 2012 by David Tuma
Senior defender Allison Herrington and the rest of the Lady Tigers players have never lost to Temple and never not won the district championship. The Lady Tigers defense took care of business in a 4-1 at home. There is always hope in sports. Tuesday night Temple's girls soccer team played an impressive game but in the end the Lady Tigers were simply too fast, too talented and too much to handle. Belton took care of business.
Belton won 4-1 but the game was still 2-1 late in the contest. Unlike past matchups where Temple kept the score down by playing everybody in front of their goal, they pressed the issue and had the talent to push forward during the game.
"Tonight was one of the better games we have had. The difference was Hadley Young. Our entire team stepped it up tonight," said Tigers head coach Barry Elkins.
Young started the game with a crossing pass in front of Temple's goal at 39:01. Temple set up a corner kick at 36:08. Aubrey Martinez set up Kat Parker for a shot and Maggie Villamaria was stopped near the Wildcat goal.
Jacey Love and Villamaria combined for a stop on defense. Young set up a free kick just out side the box at 26:36. Roxanne Reichl set up Young for a shot at 24:32. Bailee Boren had a crossing pass in front of Temple's goal. Temple got a good clean shot on goal at 13:20. Reichl to Boren to Young set up a clean shot on goal. The ball hung around on Temple's end for a few seconds and Young ended up with the ball and made Temple pay with a shot in the upper 90's to make it 1-0 with 10:45 left in the first half.
Madi Goldston had a stop at midfield and set up a free kick. Goldston fielded the free kick and almost scored with 3 minutes left. Young drove down the left side and passed to Parker who scored to put the game away with 2:10 left in the first half.
Martinez had a shot on goal to start the second half. Defender Emily Krenek with a stop set up a scoring opportunity with a deep drive down the left side. Bekah Rush was taken down by her shirt-tail in the box but offsides was called 15-yards behind the play.
Temple got a long-range free kick to go in at 33:34 to cut the lead to 2-1. Ashley Winkler set up Young who almost scored at 29:08. Parker's shot was high at 26:55. Boren's shot was high at 23:01. Young set up a corner at 16:38. Jamie Brown set up a free kick at 14:36. Love had another key stop in a game in which she dominated on defense. Young got the ball from 15-yards out, beat two players, turned and iced the game with a goal with 3:40 left to make it 3-1. Young drew a penalty kick that was converted by Parker to make it 4-1.
"Our younger players played hard and have really stepped up their play. We knew Temple would come out hard in the second half. Coach talked about it at half time. Temple always play hard against us," said Young.
The Tigers tied Temple 1-1 at Woodson Field for the struggling Wildcat program it was a game they just couldn't afford to loose after going 1-2 to start district play. The 4-8 Wildcats somehow managed to pull of a tie against a strong 9-3 Belton team after loosing six straight against the district's most dominating program the past five seasons.
