Lady Tigers domination continues with another title
Tuesday, 10 April 2012 by David Tuma
It wasn't easy considering it was the final game between the Lady Tigers and A&M Consolidated. The Lady Tigers haven't lost a game at Wilson-Kerzee since 2005. With a 2-0 win at home gave head coach Barry Elkins something to remember in his final home game.
For the program it has been a wonderful ride. From Temple refusing to play, to not being able to beat Georgetown for years to The Woodlands wanting to play the Lady Tigers in Brenham as a district tuneup...things have changed.
Belton won their eighth straight district championship and in an amazing run unmatched in the area in any sport the Lady Tigers went 87-2-2 in the past six years in district.
"This was the best way to end it. We were all crying before the game. Nobody knows where Belton is when we travel but they know about Lady Tigers soccer," said senior defender Allison Herrington.
Herrington and Emily Krenek both had stops early as A&M pushed matters setting up two corner kicks. Jacey Love had a stop and Love and Herrington combined for another as A&M controlled things early.
Krenek, a forward playing defense because the Lady Tigers are so loaded up front, drove the length of the field and hit a perfect crossing pass that was batted down by the goalie at 22:10. Kat Parker was stopped near the Consolidated goal at 20:54. Jamie Boone set up Parker whose shot was wide at 17:12.
Maggie Villamaria had a drive from her defensive position setting up Hadely Young. The half ended in a scoreless tie.
Jessie Hagen had a shot go wide. Freshman forward Aubrey Martinez flicked the ball over a players head and hit a crossing pass to Boone who scored off a header to make it 1-0 with 33:49 left. Martinez is simply gifted. She made touch passes with her feet that Belton hasn't seen in awhile.
Villamaria had stops on defense. Herrington added another stop at 21:31. Young struck a crossing pass that was just inches from being headed in by Bekah Rush. Rush hit a crossing pass that was going to be headed by Young but she was taken down from behind in front of Consolidated's goal setting up a penalty kick that was converted by Parker making it 2-0.
Anytime Young got near the ball the Consolidated defenders would kick it out of bounds not taking any chances of trying to turn the ball up field or trying to contain her. Gabby Gonzales had several stops in the second half and Martinez had a shot blocked with 1:25 left.
"It was tough being coach Elkin's last game at home. There are so many memories here. We cried before the game and he is just an awesome coach. This game was for him," said Krenek.
"When we were trying to get over that hump in the playoffs in 5A I studied a lot trying to get better but I couldn't have done any of the things I did as a coach without all these great players. They are the ones that got it done on the field," said Tigers head coach Barry Elkins. "There are just so many memories her."
