UMHB students show love to homeless

Student United Way, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor gave back to their local community by serving 106 local homeless men and women at Feed Your Sheep food kitchen located on Ave G in Temple last Sunday.

Feed Your Sheep is a food kitchen for the homeless that is run by Salvation Army. Feed Your Sheep serves lunch and dinner to the local homeless 365 days of the year, rain or shine.

Freshman Hannah Cortez said serving was an eye-opening experience for her.

"Our hearts were opened with every person that came to eat on Sunday," she said. "Most of us in the group are going into the "helping" fields such as nursing and social work or ministry, so this was a great opportunity for us to see the effect of poverty with our own eyes. We're definitely planning on going back and serving again."

The group prepared and served a beef stew with rice for lunch. They also put together packs that consisted of a sandwich, chips, fruit, candy and drink for to-go dinners.

Salvation Army Captain Martha Higdon said she appreciates the help from Student United Way.

"The experience shows there is need to help the homeless in East Bell County and that even though they are young, they can still make a difference."

Freshman Kirstean Sanchez wants fellow college students to know why it is important to give back to their local community.

"We are the future of the community and because of this, we are the up and coming people who will be taking care of this area," she said. "We have so much influence to change for the positive that we can get our hands on, as long as we have enough dedication and will power."

Student United Way is an affiliate group of United Way Central Texas and is helping to improve East Bell County by giving, advocating and volunteering in the areas of education, income and health. Its mission is to bring the entire community together to find lasting solutions that change people's lives.
