The Belton Tiger One golf team is headed for the Class 5A Regionals --Tiger One was runner-up to A&M Consolidated in the District 12-5A Tournament at Twin Rivers Golf Club in Waco prior to Easter weekend.
The top two teams and the top two other players qualified to advance to regionals April 16-17, again at Twin Rivers.
TIger head golf coach Jim Hellums was almost prophetic prior to the district showdown. "We've had a really good year. We've won five of eight tournaments and we're probably averaging around 310 or better every time we tee it up," he stated. "If they're not ready to play, I don't think they ever will be."
A look at the final leader board showed Belton carded a 322 opening day and a 310 the final day.
"We played a very poor back nine on Monday and found our backs against the wall....14 shots down, in fourth place," explained Hellums, adding "Fortunately, we had three of the top five come roaring back on Tuesday and were able to overcome that deficit and qualify for regional as the District Runners-up."
In the opening round, Andrew Paysse and Nick Ratliff led the way for their team, each carding an 80. Zach Plunk, Preston Parker and Kyle Revis were one stroke behind, with each shooting an 81.
Ratliff tied for the best final-round score at 75 and his 155 total was good for a share of fourth place. Paysse pared his second round score to 77 and Plunk fired a 76 for both to share eighth place with a 157 total. Revis ended with an 81-82-163 and Parker shot an 81-84-165.
Belton's Tiger Two team finished in eighth place with a team total of 332-346-678.
Matthew Lawyer carded an 82-78-160 to share 11th place. Other members of his team individually ended with: Austin Ritchie, 88-82-170; Ty Barber, 81-92-173; Jacob Sheeler, 82-94-176; and C.J. Norton, 87-99-186.
The final leader board listed the teams in this order --- A&M Consolidated A - 619; Belton A - 632; Bryan A - 635; Harker Heights – 648; Temple – 668; A&M Consolidated B – 672; Belton B – 678; Bryan B – 698; Copperas Cove – 704; Ellison – 979.
Belton's Medalists were Hunter Mattson, Bryan Kirchmeier and Brock Ratliff.
