District 12-5A Coach of the Year Lauren Sanders poses with her District Champion varsity Lady Tigers, left to right: Sanders, Codie Robinson, Kyler Tormey, Hannah Sims, Alessa Gonzales and Kimberlie Sniggs."We are the Champions....again" That's the song that second-year BHS women's golf coach Lauren Sanders and her varsity Lady Tigers are singing after blowing away the competition to take the championship at the District 12-5A Tournament at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco last week.
That's two-in-a-row for Sanders, who also was named District Coach of the Year, a well-deserved honor. "I can't get the smile off my face," she said.
Her 2011 team nailed the district title in her first year leading the BHS golf program. The coach was a three-year varsity player on the Belton golf team (1995-98) and the team won district and she also won individually in both her junior and senior years.
Belton's first team posted a first-day-best 354 total, 20 strokes better than A&M Consolidated's first team --- and then the following day, the red-hot Lady Tigers (354-356-710) comfortably clinched the district title as they extended the winning margin to 32 strokes over Consol (374-368-742).
"You work all year for this (tournament). This is the big one you want to win," Sanders admitted. "This is the one you want to take home!"
Senior Alessa Gonzales (89-97-176) finished in fourth place individually; senior teammate Kimberlie Sniggs (98-82-180) was seventh; and junior Kyler Tormey (86-96-182) was eighth. Fellow first team seniors Codie Robinson (86-91-177) and Hannah Sims rounded out the district championship team.
Belton also fielded a second team for the tournament, consisting of junior Kove Young (109-99-208), sophomores Taylor Jacobs (111-111-222), Brittanie Keener (118-122-240) and Samantha Waggoner (125-126-251) and freshman Madison O'Neill (117-117-234).
Lady Tiger medalists were: junior Victoria Sobiech (107-105-212), sophomore Shilpa Bhat (105-118-223) and freshman Katie Myron (108-120-228).
The district field finished in the following order: Belton A, A&M Consolidated A, Harker Heights, Temple, Copperas Cove, Ellison, A&M Consolidated B, Belton B, and Shoemaker.
The top two teams and the best two other single players qualified to advance to the Class 5A Region II Tournament April 17-18 at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course.
