Central Texas – McLane Children's Hospital Scott & White has completed construction on a three-room procedure suite. The $1.2 million facility is located on the second floor of the hospital and is for medical procedures that do not require the complements of a full operating room. The suite consists of two endoscopy rooms and an additional procedure room, and is equipped with anesthesiology and monitoring capabilities, providing enhanced access for both physicians and pediatric patients and their families.
"There are many procedures that don't need a full operating room, such as gastroenterology (GI)," said Ellen Hansen, R.N., chief operating officer and chief nursing officer for McLane Children's.
Hansen notes that since the hospital opened last fall, it has quickly met projections for patient visits. "This procedure suite provides the additional room to meet our space needs to provide the family-centered care parents are now expecting from us."
Each new procedure room has a dedicated team comprised of a pediatric specialist assisted by an anesthesiologist, nurse, technician, and a child life specialist, who work in concert to provide care to both the child and family. One parent is permitted to stay with the child in the procedure room during the administration of anesthesia, and then reunites with their child in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) before the patient wakes from the procedure.
McLane Children's encompasses 112 inpatient beds — 48 private rooms and 16 Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) rooms at McLane Children's Hospital Scott & White, with another 48 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) rooms at Scott & White Memorial Hospital-Temple. McLane
Children's has been designed to support staff in delivering family-centered care in a healing and secure environment for the pediatric patient.
