BFD Firefighters will be on selected street corners starting today collecting money for the MDA.Join Belton fire fighters and the Muscular Dystrophy Association as the Belton Fire Department kicks off its 2012 Fill the Boot campaign.
On Wednesday the BFD kicked off the campaign by hosting Justin and Joshua Fleming, two Belton boys served by MDA. In 2011 the fire fighters raised an impressive $9,108, and in 2010 they raised $8,935 for a total of over $18,000 that the citizens of Belton have contributed to MDA since the fire fighters have been allowed back on the street corners thanks to the city of Belton.
Belton fire fighters will be on the street corners filling the boot for MDA for three days; April 19, 20 and 21 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. All fire companies will be in service and available for calls as necessary. Please join us in promoting this long standing tradition of filling the boot for MDA.
Fire fighters across the country are the top contributors to MDA and raising millions of dollars each year. For many years fire fighters in Texas have lead the country as the top collecting state through their Fill the Boot efforts.
So much of the monies raised by the Belton fire fighters and other departments stay right here in Texas benefiting local families. MDA is able to use more than 77 cents of every dollar raised to provide services to families in need.
Some of the area benefits of MDA include more than $15.3 million in research funding in Texas over the last five years. During the same time period, MDA has provided more than $11.5 million in services to individuals living in Texas. Some 300 children attend MDA summer camps in Burton, Happy and Meridian each year.
Services provided to Texans include 23 MDA clinic locations throughout the state. There are currently 30 MDA-facilitated support groups in Texas.
