Tuesday, 08 May 2012 by Chuck Kelly
Tiger track sent eight athletes to last week's Region al Qualifiers meets...The girls traveled to Brownwood on Thursday and Friday, the boys went to Converse Judson for the Wagner-Judson meet.
Two of the eight earned gold medals in their event --- Chloe Lewis took first place in the Shot Put with a heave of 36'10.5" and Pathion Collins smoked the 200 meter Dash field to take first in a time of 21.17, beating runners from Churchill, Yorktown, Judson and San Marcos.
Kyle Rhoads finished second in Pole Vault with a height of 14'6", just six inches shy of first place.
Lady Tiger freshman Bekah Alcozer threw 116'4.5" for a third place finish in Discus. Teammate Chloe Lewis finished ninth with a toss of 103'7.5".
Levi Jordan was fourth in Discus with a throw of 145'4-1/2".
Katelin Huckabee took third in the 3200 meter Run in 12:38.
Ashley Russell had a personal best time of 15.28 for fifth place in the 100 meter Hurdles.
Emily Krenek leaped 5'0" to earn fifth in the High Jump. (She was hampered somewhat by having to start her run backed up on uneven ground off the running area)
"Nothing special for the athletes this week" leading up to the Region II Meet Friday and Saturday at Hart-Patterson Stadium at Baylor University, according to Lady Tiger head coach Denise Petter. "Just mainly work on technique and form. We'll spend a lot of time on technique and just tapering off....give them a chance to rest. You know, at this point fresh legs are better than anything. We don't want to get anyone hurt and try to keep everyone healthy."
The coach said the main difference between district and regionals is the schools that are competing.
"Of course, our district has some of the fastest athletes. All of the north...the Skylines and those kids...are just super-quick. It's a tough district and, of course, all the distance-people come from the Houston area and they're super-strong in Plano and, really, our region is the strongest region there is. Our kids are just going to have to be on their A-game"
