BACC to host tree dedication ceremony

Belton Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Cynthia Hernandez and Workforce Solutions of Central Texas Executive Director Susan Kamas will be honored by the Belton Area Chamber of Commerce Friday in a special tree dedication ceremony on Friday at Heritage Park.

In January, Hernandez and Kamas were honored at the Chamber's Annual Banquet with the Citizen of the Year and Beltonian awards, respectively. Since 1999, the award winners are also honored with the planting of a tree in Heritage Park along with a nameplate.

"It's a way to honor the people who win the awards and to give back to the community by planting a tree," said Mark Arrazola.

The two trees will be the 25th and 26th trees planted in the park since the program was started.

The Beltonian Award is voted on by the citizens of Belton and the Citizen of the Year Awards is decided on by the BACC Board of Directors.

Kamas said she was excited to be named the Citizen of the Year for 2011.

"I was highly flattered and extremely surprised," Kamas said. "I've been going to the Belton Chamber Banquet all the years I've worked in Belton and I've always admired the people who have received that honor."

Kamas said the tree's location is also special, for a more personal reason.

"It's extremely meaningful to me," Kamas said. "And actually, right across the way is Summer Fun and that's where I met my husband and we've been married for 42 years."

The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at Heritage Park, located on 13th Avenue (near Waco Road).
