Wednesday, 23 May 2012 by Berneta Peeples
Downtown Belton Merchants Assocition will celebrate the fourth anniversary of its Third Saturday of the Month Market Days May 19. The celebration includes the opening of the Belton Farmers Market, an antique car show which will be enhanced by the addition of vintage motorcyles, carnival rides and a performance by the Heart of Texas Gymnastics. As usual, birthday cupcakes will be served by DBMA.
Market Days draws vendors from a wide Central Texas area as well as from Belton and Bell County. "We expect our nucleus of about 60 regular vendors, with reservations coming from other areas," Erma Elser, DBMA chairman said.
The antique car display will be around the Historic Bell County Courthouse. The gymnastics performance will be at the intersection of East St. and Central Ave. The carnival will share the city parking lot at Central and Penelope with the Belton Farmers Market. The agenda includes a high wall to climb and a moon walk.
Belton Farmers Market featuring homegrown organic vegetables, will open at 8 a.m. and close "when they are sold out," according to Mary Coppin, manager. Belton Farmers Market has 22 paid participants, according to Mrs. Coppin. "We will know by the 19th what vegetables will be available and how many vendors will be there," she adds.
"For visitors/shoppers who would like to try their hand at creative art, we will have 'pet rock' painting booth" Mrs.Elser said.
Officially, Market Day sales begin at 8 a.m., but items may be purchased when any vendor is ready to sell. However, no vendor may drive a vehicle into the sales area before official closing at 4 p.m.
As usual, traffic will be closed at Main St. at Central Ave., with detour to 1st or 2nd Aves., to Penelope at Central. Saturday night events include music in the plaza at The Gin.
