9th Avenue, University Drive to close for construction

A few Belton residents will have to find an alternate route from their homes in the coming weeks as the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and the city of Belton make improvements to coincide with the university's plans of building a new stadium and student union.

Beginning on June 9, the intersection of 9th Avenue and University Drive will be closed for the replacement of storm drain facilities and beginning on June 11, Crusader Way (between University Drive and College Street) will be closed in order to relocate Crusader Way adjacent to the railroad tracks and to construct new parking areas.

"The storm drain project will carry additional storm water from the stadium and student union to the creek," City Manager Sam Lisit said. "But they have to go across the 9th/University intersection to do that and they will have to close the street to accomplish that."

Listi said the majority of residents affected by the street closures will be residents of the Chisholm Trail Senior Village.

The 9th and University Drive project is expected to last about two weeks (June 20), while the Crusader Way project is expected to be completed by the beginning of the 2012 Fall semester.

During the construction, alternate routes include University Drive north of 9th, to Crusader Way, to Loop 121, to W. 2nd Avenue to Main Street.

Turner Construction is in charge of the construction and traffic zone management.

For more information about the construction and alternate routes, contact City of Belton Public Works Director Les Hallbauer at (254) 933-5823.
