After 65 year of marriage to Harry Thrasher Sr., lovely Thelma Thrasher said they are not "just an ordinary retired couple . . . and Harry chimed in that he is "extra ordinary".
However, they both are happy that they both have been baptized twice. Both were baptized early in life, and both were baptized again in the Jordan River on a trip to the Holy Land.
Thelma and Harry, Sr. moved to Belton from the California Bay Area in1996 to be near their children and grandchildren in Texas. They include their son, the Rev. Harry Thrasher, Jr. and his family. Harry, Jr. was pastor of the First Assembly of God Church for 30 years. On his retirement two years ago his son, Matthew, became First Assembly pastor.
Harry Sr. proudly said "I am a deacon and a greeter at that church.
Senior is retired from the U.S. Army and still carries memories of D-Day3 when landed on the beach at Normady. "It was horrible."
He attended trade school on the GI Bill and became a butcher. He retired as overseer for Submarine Services for the US Navy.
He was born in Fairburg, Neb. and she is a native of Norman, Okla. Both families left native farms during the Great Depression for better prospects in California. They met while working in a shipyard in Richmond, Calf. They were married in Gainesville, Texas after WWII. While raising a son and a daughter, Thelma worked in retail sales in a dress shop.
