Sunday, 08 July 2012 by Keith Bahlmann
The Belton Kiwanis Club recently honored one outstanding fifth grade student and one eighth grade student from each of the Belton Independent School District's elementary and middle school campuses. Selection was based on six personal qualities; service to others, responsibility, honor, leadership, scholarship and patriotism.
The 2012 recipients were: Andrew Stein (Lakewood), Sidney Sherwood (Leon Heights), Joshua Bowers (Miller Heights), Gbemiga Oyenubi (Pirtle), Dallas Smith (Southwest), Julia Hauger (Sparta), Izzy Rhoads (Tarver), Ruth Lawson (Tyler), Tamah Minnis (BMS), Blair Gilbert (Lake Belton) and Rebekah Ashley (SBMS).
A permanent plaque engraved with the student's name was presented to the school's principal. Each recipient received a framed certificate, a Citizenship medallion and a gift card from a local restaurant at which the student is host for a family dinner. Participating restaurants included Coronoa's De Ora, Jake's Chinese, Luigis Italian, Sarsaparilla Saloon and The Gin. The 11 students will represent their school as they ride on the Kiwanis float in the Belton 4th of July Parade.
