Belton duo to compete in Junior Olympics

Brady-ShadrickBrady ShadrickThe young Shadrick brothers of Belton, Brian and Brady, will compete in the AAU Junior Olympics for the second straight year. The boys, members of the Temple Flyers Track Club, both participated in last year's Jr. Olympics in New Orleans and a week ago qualified in San Antonio for the 2012 Jr. Olympics that will be held in Houston the last week of July thru the first week of August.

Eleven-year-old Brian, who just completed fifth grade at Sparta Elementary and will attend Belton Middle School this fall, qualified in all three events that he competed in. He medaled and took second place in two of the events --- the long jump with a leap of 14'8" and the 50 meter Hurdles --- and placed fifth in the high jump.

Nine-year-old Brady will be in the fourth grade at Sparta in the fall. He qualified and earned a second-place silver medal in the high jump. Brady was also eligible to compete in the long jump but due to a timing conflict with the track schedule and the Belton Invitational Baseball Tournament schedule, he graciously gave up his individual sporting event to support and play with his Senior Midget City Champion Belton Longhorns --- who, by the way, won the tournament.

The Shadrick brothers are coached by Vicki Watson and compete for the Flyers, which is headed by Andrea Hernandez.

Brian-ShadrickBrian ShadrickIn addition, the sons of Robin and Scott Shadrick, both compete in the TAAF track meets.

Brian and Brady will both participate in the Regional TAAF Meet tomorrow and Saturday in Waco for a chance to compete at the state level in Corpus Christi at the end of this month.

Brian, last year's Texas State Champion in the high jump for 10-and-under, will attempt to defend his title and also compete in the long jump and, possibly, the 80 meter hurdles. Brady will compete in the high jump and long jump and, possibly, the 100 meter dash. The 80 meter hurdles and the 100 meter dash will depend on whether or not the Belton Longhorns are playing the final game for district Friday 13th .
