Library to host book fair

The Lena Armstrong public library will host its third Scholastic book fair event July 17-20. The book fair will be open daily Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The book fair offers specially priced books and educational products, including popular series, award-winning titles and new releases. For those who cannot attend the fair they can purchase items by visiting http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/lenaarmstrongpubliclibrary.

Readers will have the opportunity to receive different books and discover new adventures while reading. Each year the library has a six-week reading program which children from preschool through 8th grade can attend.

"Friends of the library purchase a book for each child that participates in the summer reading program," Library Director Kim Kroll said. "The book fair allows the children to pick a quality book and purchase additional books if they want. The library earns Scholastic dollars with each item purchased. We use the Scholastic dollars to purchase books to support the theme of the next year's summer reading program."

With each year of the reading program the theme changes. This year's theme is titles "Get a Clue at the Library."

"Children have been invited to take place in a real library mystery. Our beloved story time bear has gone missing! As the children complete their weekly reading logs they will be rewarded with a riddle that will lead them to different locations in downtown Belton," Kroll said. "Children will then search the building to locate a clue. In all the children will find our clues which will help them decide who they think the culprit is."

In addition, the library also offers weekly toddler and elementary age story times, and elementary craft times. There is also a program for middle school age children; the theme is "Realm of the Unknown." The teens are trying to solve a murder mystery.

Following completion of the summer reading program, the library plans to implement a change in library hours.

Effective Aug. 1, the hours will be: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Tuesday 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
