BPRD to offer fun for everyone on Thursday

BPRDThe BPRD will celebrate National Parks and Recreation Month tonight at Chisholm Trail Park.In honor of parks and recreation month, there will be a picnic held on July 14 at Chisholm Trail Park from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

This is something which has been celebrated in America for more than 20 years, recently the city of Belton has decided to join the celebration.

"To help us start off the morning, a young artist named Jenna McDaniel will be providing live music," Recreation Coordinator Johanna Long said. "Each area of the park will have a different sport with representatives from each sport teaching participants new moves and fun drills. The 'parade of sports' will provide an opportunity for children not experienced in sports to try them out and see which ones they like best and wish to pursue. There will also be pick-up basketball and volleyball games available as well as a friendly game of horseshoes, washers, and even disc golf."

The purpose is to encourage the community to go out into the parks, get active and connect with nature.

Long said that planning an event takes a few months and what took longest was writing out clues for a scavenger hunt.

"To start the month, we have had a Park Scavenger Hunt and a Nature Photography Contest available," Long said. "Many of our residents do not realize that Belton actually has 13 parks, with The Harris Community Center and Lena Armstrong Library added to the Belton Parks system to make 15 total parks and facilities. The Scavenger hunt is designed to get the community into every park in Belton. A small container is hidden at each park for hunters to find."

The Nature Photography Contest is for amateur photographers to have the opportunity to capture the beauty of nature in the parks and be recognized for their work.

Both contests will end today, but the following day there will be a Belton Board Game Night at the Harris Community Center. This will allow families to come out together and they will not have to pay for a fun night out.

To end the month long celebration, there will be a movie in the Park at the Harris Community Park on July 27 . Activities will begin at 8 p.m.
