Drew FitzwaterSwim Belton a USA swim organization out of Belton competed in the 'A' championship meet held in Corpus Christi recently. The team finished 18th out of 27 teams. The major plus is most of the points came from the younger swimmers that is a big positive for the next couple of years.
The Tigers swim program that was started from scratch with no pool has turned the corner in terms of being able to qualify athletes for the top meets. "It has been a long haul. We are getting kids to that top level. Our numbers have increased 100-fold since the beginning. We offer an outlet for those kids that are interested in sports outside the norm. Our middle school program has expanded and we have over 60 athletes participating," said head coach Mike Burt.
Andrew Fitzwater qualified at this meet for the Texas Age Group Swimming Championships, TAGS, in the 50-meter butterfly. The meet is being held in Austin at the UT Swim Center July 26th-29th. He will swim on Saturday the 28th. The meet brings together the fastest swimmers from each age group and event from the State of Texas.
Austin CouillardSenior to be, Austin Couillard has quailifed for the Sectional Swimming Championships, Conroe TX, August 2-5, in the 100 meter backstroke. This meet brings together some of the fastest swimmers from the State of Texas as well as the surrounding states. It is expected that there will be over 900 swimmers attending this meet.
Burt stressed how hard the athletes train year round in order to be able to compete at the top level. "In sports kids need to train year round. You can't do it part time because of how hard kids train across the state of Texas," said Burt.
