Monday, 24 September 2012 by David Tuma
The Lady Tigers finished fifth at Hewitt Midway meet and the Tigers fourth. Midway will host the district meet this fall and the meet gave a chance for teams to run the course. On the girls side Harker Heights and Temple finished ahead of the girls with all three teams within a reasonable distance of each other. Midway and Harker Heights were ahead of Belton with Belton closing the gap on the Knights in terms of time.
"I thought they did well. We were able to run the district course and it is a fast course. Most of the teams from our district were there. We were close to were we need to be in terms of times. Midway and Harker Heights have very solid teams. We need to get three of our boys times up just a little higher. It was a three mile course and our guys had a lot left at the end. We started working on our intervals this week. Banfield and Jennings had strong performances this week. Corlew ran with the varsity for the first time and he had a great meet. Martinez is moving up to varsity this week based on her time at Midway," said coach Ben Bralley.
Times for the varsity boys were: John Jennings-8th 16.45, Stephen Corlew-20th 17.38, Ridge Hale-22nd 17.45, Jonathan Lopez -23rd 17.46, Mathew Perez-25th 17.53, Michael Urbanczyk 18.17 and Logan Zwerneman 18.36.
Varsity girls times were: Macy Banfield-8th 20.31, Christina Arellano-25th 21.55, Sydney Siegfried-32nd 22.17, Macy Niemi-39th 22.36, Cheyenne Siegfried 23.04, Abbey Dolan 23.10 and Breanna Barber 23.18.
Belton's junior varsity girl's team placed third with only Killeen finishing ahead of the Lady Tigers with all the teams from district participating. Some of the top times for the Lady Tigers were Elena Martinez-10th 22.49. Amber England-21st 23.56, Alyssa Callin-24th 24.08, Kyla Smith-25th 24.12, Michaela McBride-27th 24.23 and Jenny Newberry-29th 24.26.
The junior varsity boy's team finished seventh. Top times for the boys team were: Collin Clark-4th 17:53 andTyler Fisher-2nd 19.28.
The teams travel to Pflugerville this week to run in Austin. They have a big meet in Houston the first of August. The team is in the beginning of Phase III which will officially begin next week. In this phase they work on there timing verses distance. In cross country because they don't run on a track they have to learn to pace themselves based on distance and conditions.
"We worked on our times to day on the track and we were close to the times we need to compete in district. The kids are really excited about the Nike meet in the Woodlands," said Bralley.
