BISD names Armstrong as High Pointe principal

At last week's school board meeting it was announced that the new principal for High Pointe Elementary will be Amy Armstrong, who is currently the principal at Sparta Elementary. High Pointe Elementary is scheduled to open in Fall of 2012.

Armstrong has been the principal at Sparta Elementary for four years and served as assistant principal for two years before that. In addition to her six years with BISD, she has a dozen years in Killeen ISD.

Armstrong said that she loves being a principal and is excited to open a new school.

"It's a difficult job," she said. "It's sometimes stressful, but so rewarding. The kids are so worth it."

She added that the decision to leave Sparta was not one that she took lightly because of her connections and relationships that she's developed there.

"It was a hard decision because I do love where I'm at," she said. "Sparta is kind of like a family – the staff, parents, students. It was a struggle to think about taking on a new school, but I was ready to take on the challenge. It's an honor to open up a new school."

Until Fall of 2012, she'll remain the principal at Sparta and will develop her plan on how to create a successful learning environment for the students of High Pointe.

"I think the most important thing in opening a new school is bringing staff together as one team," Armstrong said, "and create a vision on what you want the school to be."

The school vision will mirror the district's mission and vision because principals often look at it through the lens of BISD goals and visions to create the vision for their individual schools, Armstrong said.

"BISD's mission and vision will be a springboard for how we want it to sound at High Pointe," she said.

Armstrong herself has a child who will attend High Pointe, along with a middle schooler at Lake Belton Middle School and a college student. Even though her decision to leave Sparta was a difficult one, she said she knows her home is in BISD. "The biggest thing is the difficulty to leave Sparta and the strong relationships there," she said. "I really enjoyed the last six years there. Before then, I didn't know if I was going to get into Belton. It's a great place, and I was honored that they chose me. It's exciting. The community embraces the schools here and the community stands behind their schools."
