Hope for the Hungry to host annual 5K run
Monday, 25 February 2013 by Keith Bahlmann
Belton-based non-profit organization Hope for the Hungry will host its 3rd annual Trails of Hope 5K Saturday Feb. 23 at 9 a.m. in conjunction with the City of Belton Parks & Recreation and Killeen's Cen-Tex Race Series.
The race will feature both a trail and road course, as well as a free Kid K Fun Run. All proceeds will benefit the local and global efforts of Hope for the Hungry.
There is a $25 fee for early registration through Feb. 21, and a $30 fee for on-site registration the day of the race. Those registered by Feb. 12 will be guaranteed a race T-shirt and be entered into a drawing for a weekend night stay and breakfast for two at the Hilton Garden Inn in Temple.
The event is the year's kick-off race for the Cen-Tex Race series, which hosted 16 races in 2012 with more than 1,800 runners participating.
Recreation Superintendent of Killeen Parks and Recreation Sherry Wolfe said Cen-Tex was looking to expand its series, and felt the Trails of Hope 5K seemed like a perfect fit.
"It's our kick-off race, so we're hoping the uniqueness of the trail option will attract runners," she said.
The City of Belton will provide free entertainment and activities for runners and their families.
"Partnering with the Trails of Hope 5K helps us grow partnerships within the community and it allows us to offer more recreational programming to the citizens of Belton and surrounding areas. Hope for the Hungry helps so many people in need, and the Trails of Hope 5K is a simple way to help a meaningful and successful cause," said the City of Belton's Parks and Recreation Department.
With early registration showing sizeable growth from previous races, Executive Director of Hope for the Hungry Danny Davis looks forward to the event.
"I'm excited about the potential to be a great run, and an avenue to create awareness for Hope for the Hungry," he said.
Awards will be given to the overall male and female runners, as well as the top three in each age group.
There will be additional prizes and giveaways at the race.
Race-day registration and packet pick-up begin at 7 a.m. and go until 8:30 a.m. at Hope for the Hungry's site at 899 South Wheat Road in the Belton Business Park.
