The CenTex Bass Hunters hosted a Memorial bass tournament on Lake Stillhouse Hollow Sunday, but only 9 teams showed up to fish. Elton Brock, past club president, blamed the poor turnout on the extremely poor fishing conditions that have plagued this lake for the last several months. The tournament was won by the team of John Guerra of Temple and Danny Coppin of Belton with 5 fish weighing a total of 14.55 lbs. They caught their fish in less than 2 feet of 50 degree water using watermelon seed worms with light weight jigs. The trick was to let the natural action of the worm in the water be the only movement. Dan Watson of Killeen and Elton Brock of Austin took second place with one fish weighing 3.54 lbs. Their fish was also caught shallow on a watermelon seed worm. The other 7 teams zeroed.
Fishing was much better on Lake Belton during the IH35 Media tournament on Sunday, with Gerald Poboril and Daniel Barnes of Belton catching 5 fish for a total weight of 24.56 lbs earning them first place and $1,900. Gerald said they had their fish by 7:30 am fishing a narrow draw but would not divulge what they caught them on. Second place was Dale Read and Jayson Kisselburg also with 5 fish totally 21.34 lbs giving them winnings of $850. Twenty-two teams brought fish to the scales. Payouts went to the top 6 places.
Fish lightning strikes twice Sunday (from TP&W)
Fishing on Lake Amistad, Robert Robles of Del Rio caught Toyota ShareLunker 479, a 13.5-pound bass. At almost the same time, Robert Laird, Sr., of Livingston set the hook on a 13.19-pound fish that is now Toyota ShareLunker 480.
Lake Livingston is not known as a big bass lake, and some of Laird’s friends doubted him when he said he had a fish over 10 pounds to weigh in. “They didn’t want to believe me,” he said. “When I pulled her out of the bag, all their eyes flew open.”
