Softball team to open season in Bryan

For the Belton Lady Tigers softball team, the opening of the their season will have to wait until today in Bryan.

Sporadic torrential rains have postponed Belton's season opening game, slated for Elgin on Tuesday night. No make up date has been announced as of yet.

The Lady Tigers' first game of the season will now be a Bryan/College Station Tournament match-up against the Manvel Lady Mavericks on Thursday at 11 AM at Veterans Field #1 in Bryan.

Manvel is coached by two-time US Olympic gold medalist pitcher Christa Williams-Yates. Williams-Yates pitched for the United States in Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney in 2000.

The early week's weather could play a factor on field conditions in the early stages. But optimism reigns with Lady Tigers coach Matt Blackburn.

"I believe we will be good when the sun comes out and the wind starts blowing," said Blackburn.

The three-day tournament, comprised of 64 teams, presents all sorts of intriguing possibilities for the Lady Tigers. Belton will see either Bryan JV or Midlothian in the second game.

District 8-5A foes Copperas Cove and Temple are also in the tournament. Cove takes on Lewisville and Temple takes on Lake Travis in their opening round games. It is conceivable that Belton could see Cove later, being in the same side of the tournament bracket. Temple is in the opposite bracket and Big Red would only see the Lady Wildcats in late Saturday scenarios. Of course, it all depends on how all three teams fare. And there are many great teams in this tournament, with a host seeing deep playoff action in 2012.
