Belton City Council confirms new director
Monday, 03 October 2011 by Matthew Girard
The Belton City Council approved two zoning ordinances and named a new executive director of the Belton Economic Development Corporation during Tuesday night's regularly scheduled meeting at the Harris Community Center.
Although both zoning ordinances brought about extended conversations between council members, the council ultimately approved the ordinances that will bring in more commercial business to Belton.
The first ordinance was changing the zoning of 7575 W. U.S. Highway 190 (5.965 acres) located east of FM 2410 Spur from Agricultural to Commercial-2 for Tem Bell Development to move their operations to Belton. Tem Bell specializes in vehicle communication technology for the military.
The second ordinance was changing the zoning of 103 Lake Rd. from Single Family 1 to Commercial-1 for McGuire Tire, which is looking to build a new store in Belton. During the discussion, council members David K. Leigh and Marion Grayson raised concerns about possible traffic problems along Lake Road with the addition of another business.
The council approved the ordinance with the understanding that during the design phase of the property, different avenues will be looked at with the traffic problems in mind.
The council also confirmed the appointment of Cynthia Hernandez to the position of Executive Director of the BEDC after Tommy Baker, who was relieved of his duties earlier this month.
"Change is never easy," Grayson said. "Especially in an organization like the Economic Development Corporation, but I think this is an excellent decision by the board of directors because Cynthia has been there and has proven herself over the years through several directors."
The BEDC Board of Directors recommended the appointment of Hernandez during a special meeting on Sept. 19. Hernandez previously served as the Associate Executive Director of the BEDC.
In other business, the council recognized the City of Belton Finance Department with a plaque for a Certificate of Achievement for Financial Reporting for Fiscal Year 2011 by the U.S. government for the 25th consecutive year.
