The #1 Tiger golf team finished fourth in a 12-school field at the Waco ISD Heart of Texas Invitational played at Cottonwood Creek Golf Club last weekend.
“Friday was a pretty tough day to play and our scores indicated that,” stated head golf coach Jimmy Hellums. “But, we came back and played well on Saturday with the tournament’s second-best scoring round.”
He wasn’t kidding --- his Tigers shaved 28 points off their first day’s score. Subtract those 28 from their opening day and Belton would have finished one stroke behind the winner.
Bryan won the tournament with a two-day team total of 643. Rounding out the top five were Gatesville, Stony Point, Belton and Georgetown.
The rest of the field in order were: Lampasas, Midway, Ellison, Salado, Shoemaker, Waco and Waco University.
Tiger golfers were tightly bunched individually: Nick Ratliff led with an 84-82-166; Chris Sanders was right behind with 86-82-168; Levi Hudleston had 88-82-170; Travis Hite posted a 92-78-170, that included carding a second round 2-under-par 34 on the back nine; and Zach Plunk shot a 92-80-170 to round out the team.
The individual Belton golfers’ scores ranged from 78 to 82 on the second day’s 18-holes.
