A phone call from Shirley Burns at Morgan's Point on July 6 brought up a most interesting question about Belton's famous July 4 Independence Day event.
She wanted to know WHEN IT SNOWED ON JULY 4.
Shirley said Burl Combert from Moody told her "years ago" that he was in Belton on July 4 ... AND IT SNOWED. Shirley is "pretty sure they rode the train from Moody to Belton for the celebration."
It has been an accepted fact since 1924 that it turned very cold and people went home for coats during the afternoon.
Did a few snowflakes fall then? In 1932 winter coats were worn on July 4, but no snow was reported.
