Belton ISD is proud to announce that Belton High School seniors Melo Arantes and David Shelburne, have officially been named National Merit Finalists, a recognition that places them among the nation’s most accomplished students. This prestigious designation is awarded to a select group of students nationwide who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and dedication to their education.
Originally named Semifinalists in September 2024, they advanced to Finalist status after meeting rigorous academic requirements and excelling in standardized testing. This achievement makes them eligible for competitive National Merit Scholarships.
Melo Arantes shared his excitement about the honor.
“Being named a National Merit Finalist is truly rewarding. The process—from preparing for the PSAT to writing college essays—was challenging but helped me grow. My advice to younger students is to start early, stay consistent, and apply yourself in every class.”
“It feels great to see my hard work pay off,” said Shelburne. “My family has been incredibly supportive, and this recognition opens doors to scholarship opportunities.” He emphasized the importance of studying consistently, especially over the summer, to succeed on the PSAT.
Belton High School Principal Claudia Knox praised Arantes and Shelburne as exemplary student leaders.
“They balance academics, leadership, and athletics, proving students can excel in all areas.”
She highlighted their well-rounded success, adding, “Their achievement shows that involvement in extracurriculars and academic excellence go hand in hand.”
Superintendent Dr. Malinda Golden also commended the students’ success.
“Steven Melo Arantes and David Shelburne exemplify the academic excellence we strive for in Belton ISD. Their hard work and dedication are truly commendable, and we are proud to celebrate this achievement with them.”
Knox also emphasized Belton High School’s commitment to student success.
“With resources like Tiger Time tutoring, study groups, and clubs, our staff supports students in reaching their full potential.”
As National Merit Finalists, Arantes and Shelburne are now in the running for prestigious scholarships, with final designations to be announced in April. The National Merit Scholarship Program awards approximately 7,500 scholarships annually, providing significant financial support for college-bound students.
