Bronco football camp a great family event

The sixth Lake Belton Bronco Football Camp was held at Bronco Field this week. With the program in its sixth year, many of the first campers are now helping lead the camp. “It is a lot of fun to watch kids grow from elementary to middle school to high school players,” Lake Belton head coach Brian Cope said. “We were very proud of how our high school kids did interact with the little kids. It is one of my favorite things to watch during camp.” The camp had an outstanding turnout, even with the hot conditions. “We had 340 campers on day one,” Cope said. “What an awesome number and thankful to our coaches who made sure that each kid was learning and having a great time. It was hot on day one. We are hoping for at least a little cloud cover the next 2 days.” The camp is a dual-session camp, with incoming first through sixth, and incoming seventh through ninth grade. “In the kindergarten through sixth grade camp, we are teaching basic football skills, and also measuring them on punt, pass, kick and speed,” Cope said. “To watch those kids tackling the tackling ring and getting up with a smile each time was so fun to watch. In the seventh through ninth camp, we are teaching fundamentals and scheme. This is a big help to give them a head start once their season starts which for freshman is next week.” This camp has been a neat one, with Jaxon Skidmore and Ryne Cope in attendance. A total of eight coaches’ sons participated in the sixth annual event. “Both boys LOOK the part of coaches sons and some really good skills to match,” Cope said. “It is absolutely the best. We had eight coaches with kids in the camp and made sure their dad, who spends so much time away because of the job, gets to work on their side of camp. To watch them have a blast with their son is so fun to watch. Family is vital to our success.”
