Teen dies from Dec. 30 gunshot wound

The 17-year-old who suffered a gunshot wound to the head on Dec. 30, 2025, died from his injuries on Saturday, Jan. 3.


Belton police have identified the victim as Josiah Alcozer, Paul Romer, director of communications for the City of Belton, stated in a media release.


“Our hearts go out to the friends and family of Josiah,” Police Chief Larry Berg said. “This is a tragic reminder that guns should be handled with extreme care.”


According to Romer, Alcozer and others at a residence in the 800 block of W. Avenue I handled a gun, which discharged and struck Josiah in the head on the evening of Dec. 30, and occurred around 8:13 p.m.


Alcozer was transported to a local hospital and there was no threat deemed to the public.
