Ten extra base hits leads Lake to 19-0 win over Eagles

The Class 5A No. 4 Lake Belton softball team continued District 16-5A play on Friday as they took on the Ellison Eagles in Killeen.
The Broncos posted nine runs in the first inning, highlighted by Trista Sheka’s grand slam home run, as ten of Lake’s 18 hits were extra base hits in their 19-0 win over the Eagles in three innings.
Ana Diaz started off the scoring with an RBI that scored Alexis Ortiz. Brysen Gott’s single scored Maddison Ruiz, and Addison Sims’ double scored Madison Naser to give Lake a 4-0 lead in the first.
The Broncos loaded the bases for Sheka. On a 1-0 delivery, Sheka turned on the pitch and drilled over the left field fence to clear the bases and double Lake’s lead to 8-0.
Ortiz’s triple to right field scored Madison Perkins to cap the first inning scoring.
While the Broncos’ offensive was lighting up the scoreboard, Natalie Hosch held the Eagles’ offense in check having allowed three hits and struck out four over three innings for the win.
The Broncos continued the barrage in the second, as Gott’s single scored Naser, Perkins’ triple scored Sims and Nylah Berrian, Ortiz’s single plated Perkins, and Ruiz’s double scored Diaz and Ruiz to increase the lead to 15-0.
In the third, Lilli Herrera’s single scored Naser, Alaysha Williams’ single drove home Briley Updyke, Sheka’s line drive double brough home Herrera and Avery Park’s single scored Williams to cap the scoring.
Lake Belton shuts out Waco 10-0 in six, clinches District 16-5 title.
The Broncos hosted Waco High to kick off the final week of District 16- 5A.
Natalie Hosch allowed two hits and walked one while striking out 11 over six innings and Madison Perkins had a three-hit night as the Broncos run-ruled the Lions in six innings, 10-0.
The win clinched Lake Belton’s fifth consecutive district championship and has 57 straight win in district play.
Lake began their scoring in the bottom of the second with three runs. Waco’s Chloe Nava walked Perkins to force home Addison Sims. Alexis Ortiz’s sacrifice fly scored Alaysha Williams, and Madison Naser was hit by a pitch to force across Trista Sheka.
The Broncos scored three times in the fourth inning. Perkins scored on a passed ball, Ana Diaz’s sacrifice to the pitcher scored Ortiz, and Park singled home Hosch to increase Lake’s lead to 6-0.
Lake Belton added on a run in the fifth when Ortiz singled to left to score Perkins.
The Broncos scored their final three runs of the contest in the sixth. Maddison Ruiz hit a solo home run, Briley Updyke was hit by a pitch which scored Park, and Perkins’ single to right field scored Sims to end the game.
Perkins’ three hits and Avery Park’s two hits led Lake’s nine-hit attack.
“It was a good week, but we also have a great deal of softball ahead,” Lake Belton head coach Kelsie McEachern said.
The Broncos (27- 2, 9-0 District) will host Killeen Chaparral (6-3) on Thursday for an opportunity to close out their fifth consecutive district season undefeated.
Lake Belton will take on Class 6A No. 6 Round Rock Cedar Ridge on Tuesday at 5 pm at Bronco Diamond in a non-district playoff tune-up.
