Belton’s Parks and Recreation Department welcomed their new Recreation Coordinator Adam Wells to his position in late June. Wells brings with him more than 20 years of experience in the outdoors industry, with roles relating to outreach, sales, and marketing. In 2019 he founded his own short-lived outdoors business, the O’Wells Adventure Company. “Anything that’s outdoor recreation related, I’ve probably had a hand in it,” says Wells. Wells is a native of Oklahoma and has moved frequently within the United States throughout his life. “I lived everywhere from Florida to Colorado,” said Wells. He ultimately gravitated toward Texas, being the home state of his wife. Originally settling in Austin, they relocated to Round Rock, then again to Belton where they have lived for the past three years. Wells has been married for 15 years and has two sons who share his love for the outdoors. Wells’ first introduction to government work was as a purchaser for the state of Texas, a role he held immediately prior to his current position. “Doing the purchasing for the state was nice, but it pulled me away from what my true passion is, which is outdoor recreation,” explains Wells. When Wells found the job listing for Recreation Coordinator online and realized he could cut out his daily commute to Austin, he decided to apply. The responsibilities of the Recreation Coordinator include growing and building outdoor programs within Belton. Wells plans events and teaches outdoor education classes, with a focus on bringing people into nature. “My goal is to get more people from inside, outside,” says Wells. Wells discussed the challenges he faces as a new player in the Belton governmental scene. He hopes to build a strong network of contacts to help him fulfill the functions of the department. “That right now is a little bit of a challenge, because I’m new and I don’t know a ton of people,” states Wells. Wells commented on the significance of being granted his new position. “It’s an honor to have that responsibility, to give back to our community, and to give back to the City of Belton.” Wells’ first big project as Recreation Coordinator was facilitating the National Park and Recreation Month events of this July. Going forward he hopes to host more kayaking, archery, and other outdoor recreational events. “This year is definitely going to kick off new programing… and hopefully we will go even bigger in the future,” says Wells.
