The Bell County Committee for People with Disabilities celebrated its 45th Annual Rusty Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, Oct. 14. This year’s theme was “Carving Your Own Path.”
The Rusty Awards were established in memory of Anthony “Rusty” Morales, who, after a motorcycle accident, became a powerful advocate for people with disabilities. The ceremony continues his mission by honoring individuals with disabilities and those who are strong advocates for the disability community.
The event brought together awardees, family members, friends, co-workers, and committee officers. Dinner was catered by Bella Blue Café of Temple, featuring iced tea, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and bread rolls. Sign language interpretation was provided by Rosalyn Poole.
Ernest Wilkerson opened the evening with a heartfelt welcome:
“The committee and the group have really helped me and what I’ve been through with my disabilities. I’ve learned to turn my disabilities into my strengths.”
Dr. Sonjanette Crossley led the invocation, sharing:
“God, we honor this occasion when we tell others that you’re an overcomer. We will do this, because with God’s help, all things are possible.”
Several awardees expressed gratitude to God for helping them cope, heal, and thrive through their challenges.
Among the evening’s honorees, Carolyn Butts received the Jennifer Phillips Award for Courage and spoke through sign language interpretation:
“I volunteer at my church for Awana. I’m the secretary to help children. I’m very thankful to God for His grace and helping me live through all those seizures. I do have courage.”
Her mother added, “Her motto ever since she was a child: never give up.”
