Hundreds of golf fans and University of Mary Hardin-Baylor supporters packed the Belton campus Friday for the dedication of the new Crusader golf center.
The Jane & Mac Hickerson Golf Club was celebrated with a special ceremony attended by two-time Masters champion Ben Crenshaw, a specialist in designing courses around the world. The new facility is located off University Drive on the UMHB campus.
“This is the new home for Cru golf,” said Dr. Randy O’Rear, UMHB president. “When you tour these facilities, you will see that they are way under par. And in golf, that’s a really, really good thing.”
O’Rear added, “If you have championship goals like we do at UMHB, best-in-class facilities are important — and now we have them for our golf program.”
The facility’s name honors former UMHB men’s golf coach Mac Hickerson and his late wife, Jane. The practice course — which features four greens and 22 tee boxes — is called The Mac. The new golf center also includes a lighted short-game practice area.
Hickerson attended the ceremony. He led the UMHB men’s team from 1980 to 1999, making him the longest-tenured golf coach in UMHB history, said Ashley Smith, marketing and public relations director for the school.
“Mac, we could not be more thrilled to honor your service to Mary Hardin-Baylor and the golf program, and Jane’s, by naming this the Jane & Mac Hickerson Crusader Golf Club,” said O’Rear. “We love you, and we’re so honored. Thanks for letting us put your name on the building.”
In addition, the university dedicated the Conner Golf Performance Center — the clubhouse and locker room facility — in honor of Mary Kay and Jerry Conner of Sugar Land.
“The Conners are humble people, and it took a lot of convincing to name this facility the Conner Golf Performance Center,” O’Rear continued. “They deserve to have their names on this facility — it’s life-changing in many ways for these players. We are grateful.”
The ceremony included two ribbon cuttings — one at the Conner Golf Performance Center and one at The Mac. Afterward, Crenshaw and others hit ceremonial tee shots, and visitors were invited to tour the new facility.
The men’s golf program began in the early 1970s and has since won 12 conference championships. The women’s golf program, founded in 1996, won the NAIA National Championship in 2000, has claimed 14 American Southwest Conference championships, and became the first UMHB athletic program to win an NCAA Division III National Championship in 2013.
