Jonny Watts stomps trash in a Dumpster to make room for more debris collected during last year’s Lake Belton Trash Clean-Up. This year’s event is Sept. 13 at Cedar Ridge Park.
Participants are urged to wear closed-toe shoes, gloves, bug spray and sunblock. Hats and towels for cooling off also are recommended.
“We are starting the cleanup at 7:30 but people are welcome to come out later if they wish,” said Teri Swanson, a Clean-Up organizer. “We will have three groups going out, so if it’s easier for families to come a little later, that’s OK.”
“We usually have about 100 volunteers take part,” she added. “This year we are going to focus on Rogers Park, Leona Park and around some of the marinas. We will also have a group cleaning up by the damn in the overflow area.”
“Trash is a community problem, and the Lake Belton community has definitely stepped up to the plate to help keep our lake clean,” Swanson said. “We want our beautiful lake to stay pretty and healthy for many years to come.”
“We hope we can reach the younger generation so they develop the same passion as we do for keeping our lake beautiful,” she said. “Periodically, members of the group get together and clean small areas throughout the year.”
“This will be our sixth year of being an organized cleanup group for Lake Belton,” Swanson said. “Last year, we cleaned more than 32,000 pounds of trash.”
