Captain “D” Danny Dossman with Dossman Funeral Home, with the help of Lion volunteers and student volunteers — Whitney “Doc” Rodgers, Athletic Trainer, Lake Belton High School, and Brian Cope, Campus Athletic Coordinator and Head Football Coach at Lake Belton High School — delivered cookies and notes along the route, helped open the event, manned the route, worked the water station, created a balloon arch, counted the winners, helped set up the picnic in the park, and even crewed the wacky boats.
The picnic in the park was from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring blues band Jay White and the Blues Commanders, carnival games, face painting, duck pond, corn-hole, pumpkin decorating, Belton Fire Department Certification scavenger hunt, and hot dog and sausage wrap concessions. People brought their own lawn chairs and sat under the pecan trees to listen to the band. There were lots of auction items.
The wacky boat race was at 1 p.m. with winners receiving prizes and trophies. There were cardboard category race winners: first, second, and third place; wacky open category race winners: first, second, and third place; President’s award; and People’s Choice. Handmade boats lined up at 11 a.m. People’s Choice judging race heats started at 1 p.m.
“We got a high school kid to row the boat,” said Fire Chief Jonathon Fontenot. He won Grand Champion two years in a row and won a paddle trophy. The Belton Lion’s Club Baby Pearl won second. The Fire Department Certification crew team won People’s Choice.
“My son is Jayden Alba,” said Gisele Alba. “I came to support him. I’m proud of him. He and his friend Caden Harrison paddled the Baby Pearl. Caden did it before. They’re both on the football team.”
Brendan Brown with the Bin Spa won third place.
“We made our boat the SS Bin Spa. We won third place. All three of us rowed,” said Brown. His girlfriend Madileyne Shores and Brandon Nile helped him.
Sponsors included HEB, Lion Patti Powell Family concession stand, and Belton Parks and Recreation.
Funds were raised to support the many annual Belton Lions Club activities supporting the Belton community like Lions Park, high school scholarships, Lions Camp for children with disabilities and special needs, holiday food baskets for the needy, others, and the underserved Belton community.
