The last time Chaparral suffered a district loss was at Killeen Ellison on Oct. 20, 2023. The defending District 16-5A champions traveled to Belton with an unblemished record through two contests this season, but the hopes of earning another undefeated title were dashed as the Lady Tigers swept the Lady Bobcats.
With the victory, Belton is tied for second place in the district standings, owning an identical 2-1 record with the Lady Bobcats.
Lake Belton sits atop the field, improving to 3-0 by winning 25-17, 25-17, 25-9 at Waco, while Ellison (1-2), Waco University (1-2), and Waco (0-3) round out the field.
The Lady Trojans went the distance with the Lady Eagles on Tuesday, escaping Ellison’s gymnasium with a 25-27, 30-28, 25-23, 12-25, 15-3 victory.
Now, the Lady Tigers must contend with the Lady Eagles, who make the trip to Belton on Friday for a 5:30 p.m. start.
Last season, the squads split their encounters. In the first round, the Lady Tigers fell 25-20, 25-14, 26-24 on the road before avenging the outcome with a 25-19, 25-18, 25-17 win on their home floor in the rematch.
Undoubtedly, sophomore Brylee Renegar will be key for Belton in this year’s series after posting eight kills versus Chaparral.
Regardless of Friday’s result, next week, the Lady Tigers will need to become road warriors, playing four of their final six matches away from home.
Belton plays at Waco on Tuesday to conclude the first round of district, and the Lady Tigers follow by traveling to Lake Belton on Oct. 10. Then, they sandwich trips to Chaparral (Oct. 17) and Ellison (Oct. 21) in between home matches versus visiting University (Oct. 14) and Waco (Oct. 24).
Should the Lady Tigers earn a playoff berth, the bi-district round would be played between Oct. 30 and Nov. 1.
In 2024, Belton advanced to the second round of the Class 5A, Division II bracket, sweeping Kaufman to hoist the bi-district championship trophy, but Poteet eliminated the Lady Tigers in the ensuing round with a straight-set victory.
Overall, Belton is 24-11 following a shaky start resulting in a 1-5 record, but the Lady Tigers have lost back-to-back matches only once since. During the same span, Belton experienced both a five-match and a 10-match winning streak.
