The Lady Broncos have reached the third round for a second consecutive season.
One year after being eliminated from the Class 5A, Region I playoffs in the regional semifinals, Lake Belton has returned with every intention of erasing the defeat.
Although the opponent is different, the goal remains the same — advance.
The Lady Broncos emphatically entered the round by blowing out Dallas Adamson Monday for a team championship win as a one-sided performance.
Lake Belton cruised to a 25-10, 25-14, 35-19, victory behind a Kaitlyn Hutchins’ standout showing. The junior outside hitter finished with 16 kills and three blocks to go along with serving up three aces.
With the victory, the Lady Broncos advance to play Melissa (22-17) or Dallas Highland Park (38-8) either today, Friday or Saturday. The squads played their area-round contest Tuesday, but a final score was not available.
Lake Belton (31-12) used a 13-1 outburst in the opening set to take control against Adams (21-12), and in the second set, the Lady Broncos immediately connected on a 10-3 lead before pulling away by winning seven of nine points midway through.
In the final set, Lake Belton held an 18-3 advantage before completing the sweep.
The win came on the heels of a 3-0 victory against Aledo in the first round. Unlike their contest against Red Oak, the first two sets were back-breaking romps.
Lake Belton narrowly escaped the first two sets before finally finding their rhythm and winning 25-22, 26-24, 25-13.
Along the way, the Lady Broncos overcame significant starts, trailing 22-19 in the opening set and 22-18 in the second set.
Hutchins finished with 21 kills, five digs, three aces and a pair of blocks, and the outing was complimented by several teammates.
Madi Bingham, a senior setter, had 22 assists, seven kills, six digs, two blocks, and one ace, while senior libero Ryleigh Krueger collected 17 digs to go with five assists and an ace.
Should the Lady Broncos advance, they would face the winner of championship matches in McKinney North, Frisco Centennial or Midlothian in the regional round Monday or Tuesday.
Lake Belton has won 13 consecutive matches, including all 10 of its District 16-5A contests, with its last loss coming in a 3-1 decision at Pflugerville Weiss on Sept. 19. During the successful stretch, the Lady Broncos have only lost three sets.
