Lake Belton’s playoff run came to an end Friday night, as the Broncos fell to Highland Park in the bi-district round to close the year at 5-6 overall and 4-3 in district play. Despite the loss, the Broncos showed progress and set the stage for a strong offseason.

Lake Belton opened the game with momentum, moving the ball efficiently on its opening drive with early carries from Zyien Dupree and quarterback Jessiah James. Facing fourth and long, the Broncos kept the possession alive with a successful fake punt from Davion Peters to Gavin Owens. A few plays later, James found Zion Harness on third and seven for the game’s first touchdown, giving Lake Belton a 6-0 lead after a missed extra point.
The Broncos added to their early spark by recovering an onside kick, but Highland Park’s defense tightened and forced a punt. The Scots answered with a scoring drive built on quarterback runs and short passes, taking a 7-6 lead with a fourth-and-two rushing touchdown.
Lake Belton responded before the end of the first quarter. After a pair of defensive penalties extended the drive, James connected with Peters for a 54-yard touchdown to regain the lead, 13-7. Highland Park countered immediately, scoring on a 70-yard pass on the next snap and shifting the momentum for good.
The Broncos threatened again early in the second quarter with a 23-yard completion to Luke Phillips, but the drive stalled near midfield. Highland Park followed with another scoring drive to go up 21-13, then added two more touchdowns before halftime, including a long third-and-17 strike, to take a 35-13 advantage into the break.
Highland Park continued to build on its lead early in the third quarter, capitalizing on a short field for another touchdown. Lake Belton struggled to regain rhythm as pressure on James resulted in sacks and disrupted possessions. The Scots remained efficient, adding two more rushing touchdowns in the second half to extend the margin.
In the fourth quarter, Highland Park focused on controlling the clock, and a late drive deep into Lake Belton territory eventually ended on downs. The Broncos closed the game with a final offensive possession as the season came to an end.
While the loss marked the conclusion of Lake Belton’s playoff push, the Broncos’ performance throughout the year provides plenty of reason for optimism. Their 4-3 district finish secured a fourth-place standing and a postseason berth in one of the area’s most competitive districts. With many key contributors returning on offense and valuable varsity experience gained across the roster, Lake Belton enters the offseason with a solid foundation and the potential to push for a deeper playoff run next fall.
