Pet lovers and trick or treaters attended the two-day family and pet friendly tenth annual Pet Extravaganza sponsored by Rescue Magazine this past weekend.
“The show was a big success. We had many animal adoptions. It was a record attendance for us this year,” said President of Rescue Magazine, Ron Ducharme.
There were lots of vendors for people, pets, services, and their homes. There was free pet microchipping.
There was a giant trick or treating with vendors passing out candies and freebies to children, pets, and all attendees. Pirate Captain Dan Sparrow from the United Kingdom was at the entrance to take pictures with VIPs and take pictures for donation.

“I did the VIP. All my dogs have Native American names. Udonatah means bear in Cherokee. He is a European great dane that weighs one hundred seventy-seven pounds. I compared him to the pony here and he was the same height and length,” said VIP attendee Terri Homan. She’s from Copperas Cove and is retired, but was a certified trainer that used to train service dogs. Under the ADA, only dogs and miniature horses can be recognized as service animals.
There were pet adoption opportunities of cats, dogs, ferrets, and reptiles. Some places with animals available for adoption included Journey Home Rescue, Texas Ferret Lovers Rescue, Austin Texas Sugar Glider Rescue, Healing Heart Rehab, Brazos Valley, the Society for Creative Anachronism, and the Bell County Animal Shelter.
Brendan Brown with the Bin Spa dressed up as Oscar the Grouch from Sesame Street. Centex Automotive grilled hot dogs. Scotti’s Italian Ice truck was there. Masseuse Heather Stevens gave massages. Freedom Urgent Care donated water and had a booth with free cups, band aids, and pens.
The American Legion Post 133, VFW Post 4008, Temple-Belton Ladies Lions, volunteered and had booths, and the Temple-Belton Ladies Lions Club made braided dog toys from old t-shirts.
Bailing Out Benji and Puppy Mill Free Texas had booths. They exist to expose and end the cruelty that occurs within licensed and unlicensed dog breeding facilities across the U.S.
“We will get our dogs out and they will do different tricks like spin the barrel, ride on riding toys, and do fun tricks,” said Pat Marshall with Happy Hounds Dog Training.
There was a Halloween costume contest for adults, children, and pets. One attendee, Melodyee Becker dressed up her Morkie Poos.
“It’s fantabulous. I’m having a great time here,” said Becker.
Attendees from Salado, Autumn Walker and her daughter Amber Gildey, saw a flyer about the Pet Extravaganza at PetCo.
“It’s a good show. My daughter got a lot of candy,” said Walker. Gildey was dressed like Spider Girl.
There was a pet cemetery by I Shih-tzu Knot and a haunted house. Volunteers received free event tickets and lunch was provided. Military, police, and first responders received free entry.
