The Lake Belton Broncos are on the mend after a physical matchup against A&M Consolidated last Friday.
The Broncos had several opportunities in the first half of their 44-17 loss to the Tigers.
“We had our chances in the first half and needed to capitalize,” Lake Belton head coach Brian Cope said. “Between the turnovers and getting stopped on first down, that put us behind. On defense, we allowed too many big plays because we did not execute what was called. We have to get back to not pressing and doing our job to the best of our ability. The special teams were good all night. We have areas to improve but we won that which was a positive out of the night.”

It has been often said that a team’s biggest improvement comes from between game one and two. Lake had 165 passing yards, with Maverik Maddux was 6-of-18 for 90 yards, a touchdown
and an interception, and Reese Rosenbaum going 7-of-7 for 75 yards. Zion Harness caught seven passes for 123 yards and a touchdown.
The Broncos earned just 52 yards on 30 carries. Arrington Alexander led the way with 46 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown.
“We have to be able to run the ball better,” Cope said. “We also are already pretty banged up going into the second game, so we will need players to step up. On defense, it comes back to doing our job on each and every play and we must tackle better.”
The McNeil Mavericks are the Broncos next opponent at Gupton Stadium on Thursday. The Mavericks were doubled up by the Weiss Wolves last Thursday, 56-28. Weiss scored 35 secondhalf points, including 28 unanswered on three TD passes from Jaxon Schad and a fumble recovery. Despite seven turnovers, the Mavericks ran for 172 yards and four touchdowns. Jarrell Gary had 64 yards and a score, Aden Taylor rushed for 56 yards and two touchdowns, and receiver Zach Christie had 105 yards on eight catches.
“They are electric on offense,” Cope said. “We have to manage the big play and get them into obvious passing downs. They have multiple running backs and multiple receivers and all of it is out of the same personnel package.
The Mavericks held up well against a prolific Weiss offense before the Wolves scored at will in the final quarter. “They run the Iowa State 3-3 defense with three high safeties,” Cope said. “It is built to stop spread offenses. So, we have to be able to handle them up front to win. It will come down to how well we can run the football.”
In Cope’s point of view, a focus on execution will be a major key on Thursday night.
“We must become disciplined with our execution,” Cope said. “Last Friday, the schemes were good, but the execution was not. We have a short week, and great opportunity to have a short-term memory and move on. We are looking forward to a fun night.”
