Bell County’s newest nonprofit launches Nov. 1 with the goal of providing beds for local children.
“No Kid Sleeps on the Floor in Our Town” is the mission statement of Sleep in Heavenly Peace of Bell County.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) is a volunteer-driven nonprofit dedicated to building and delivering handmade, fully furnished beds to children in need.
SHP’s mission is to tackle the issue of children without beds, which is estimated to affect nearly 3 percent of the population—or more than 1,000 kids locally.
The kickoff friend-raising event is 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Cultural Activities Center in Temple, in conjunction with the opening of the Holly Dunn exhibit.
Tables are already sold out, but some individual tickets may still be available. Proceeds will be used to buy materials to build beds for children in Bell County.
While the first official bed assembly events in Temple won’t start until February 2026, the Waco branch has its next scheduled bed construction event from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 8.
“This is a hands-on opportunity for volunteers and teams to work side by side, learn the process, and bless kids in our community who don’t have a bed of their own,” said Dr. Jeff Bates, MD. “Our local leadership team includes acting President Kyle Huitt, Norman Northen, Matt Wilson, Jerry Jones, Dr. Steve Norris, MD, and Mitch McCluhan.”
Sleep in Heavenly Peace was started in 2012 in Idaho by Luke Mickelson.
By the end of 2024, SHP has grown into a charity with more than 300 chapters spanning 47 states and operating in four different countries, with nearby chapters in Waco, Georgetown, and Round Rock.
With this new mission project in Bell County, sponsors and volunteers are needed to make sure no kid sleeps on the floor in our town.
