City of Belton holding public hearing on tax rate
August 28, 2025
Special to the Journal
The Belton City Council recently took a record vote to propose a tax rate of $0.522500 per $100 valuation.
The record vote was not unanimous, with John R. Holmes, Sr., Mayor Pro Tern; Craig Pearson; tephanie O’Banion; and Daniel Bucher voting to propose that rate. Luke Potts voted against proposing that tax rate.
David K. Leigh, Mayor; and Dave Covington were absent from that meeting.
This rate is higher than the no-new-revenue tax rate of $0.496581 per $100, but lower than the voter-approval tax rate of $0.531427 per $100.
The no-new-revenue tax rate is the tax rate for the 2025 tax year that
will raise the same amount of property tax revenue for the City of Belton from the same properties in both the 2024 tax year and the 2025 tax year. The voter-approval tax rate is the highest tax rate that the City of
Belton may adopt without holding an election to seek voter approval of the rate.
This means that the City of Belton is proposing to increase property taxes for the 2025 tax year.
A public hearing on the proposed tax rate will be held on Tuesday, September 9, at 5:30 p.m. at Wright Room at the Harris Community Center, 401 N. Alexander St.
However, since the proposed tax rate is not greater than the voterapproval tax rate, the City of Belton is not required to hold an election at which voters may accept or reject the proposed tax rate.
Belton citizens may express support for or opposition to the proposed tax rate by contacting the members of the city council of the City of Belton at their offices or by attending the public hearing mentioned above.
