Special to the Journal
Seven Belton ISD schools have now been recognized as Purple Star Designated Campuses, a pres- tigious honor awarded to schools that go above and beyond to sup- port military-connected students and their families. “Nearly 30 percent of our stu- dents are military-connected, and we are honored to serve them,” said Dr. Malinda Golden, Belton ISD Superintendent. “These Purple Star designations recognize the in- tentional work happening on our campuses to ensure students feel supported and valued, no matter how many times they may have to transition schools. It is a privilege to walk alongside our military fam- ilies and provide the stability and care their children deserve.”

BISD hosts an event for the district’s Adopt-A-Unit program. Seven Belton ISD campuses have been awarded a Purple Star designation.
The newest campuses to re- ceive this designation—Charter Oak Elementary, High Point El- ementary and Lake Belton Middle School—join Lakewood Elemen- tary, Southwest Elementary, Belton Middle School and Belton High School in being celebrated for their commitment to ensuring military students feel welcomed and sup- ported throughout their educational journey.

It is a privilege to walk alongside our military fam- ilies and provide the stability and care their children deserve.” Belton ISD fosters student-led programs such as Military Student Ambassadors, where peers mentor and support incoming military stu- dents, ensuring a smooth transition into the school community. The district also proudly observes Pur- ple Up! Day each year, celebrating military families and strengthening connections between students and their parents serving in the armed forces. Additionally, Belton ISD partners with the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) to address the academic, emotional and so- cial challenges that come with a military lifestyle, en- suring comprehensive support for military-connected students.
Each school earned the Purple Star designation by meeting rigor- ous criteria, including establishing a dedicated campus-based military liaison, maintaining resources for military families and implement- ing transition programs to ease the adjustment for students mov- ing due to military-related reloca- tions. These campuses also engage in ongoing military appreciation activities, demonstrating their deep respect for the sacrifices of service members and their families.

Dr. Cassandra Spearman, Belton ISD Assistant Superintendent of Operations, shared, “Being recog- nized as Purple Star Designated Campuses highlights the care and dedication our staff and students put into supporting our military-connected families. We know how important it is to make transitions as seamless as possible, and we are honored to be part of their journey.”
Ashlie Thomas, Principal of Charter Oak El- ementary, added, “Our campus is proud to be a place where military-connected students feel immediately at home. Whether it’s welcoming new families, cel- ebrating military service, or connecting students with peers through our ambassador program, we want ev- ery child to know they belong here. Receiving the Purple Star designation is a reflection of the heart our staff and students put into serving those who serve our country.”
Christy Fatula, Charter Oak Elementary School Counselor and Military Liaison, said, “Within the past year we held our first Veterans Day Program, launched Military Circle Support Groups, and, most importantly, created the COMMS Team. Named by our active-duty student leaders who went through am- bassador training, the Charter Oak Military Mission Squadron welcomes every new student with tours, lunch buddies, recess play and fun details like which water fountain is the coldest or the best days to buy lunch. This peer-to-peer connection eases transitions and helps students feel at home right away.
The COMMS Team also plans monthly events for military families, with the favorite being our Students versus Parents Kickball Game during the Month of the Military Child. As an active-duty spouse myself, serving as Military Liaison has been the most reward- ing gift — watching our students give back to Charter Oak’s bravest heroes, our military kids.”
This recognition further solidifies Belton ISD’s role as a district that honors and respects the sacrific- es made by military families, ensuring their children are cared for and supported in their educational jour- ney, no matter where they may be stationed.
