Members of the Betty Martin Chapter of the DAR celebrate the signing of the Constitution with the annual Bells Across America.
The Betty Martin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution gathered on the steps of the Bell County Courthouse, Wednesday, September 17 for the annual Bells Across America observation.
Citizens were invited to ring bells signifying the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution, Sept 17, 1787, in Philadelphia, where church bells rang.
Janie Reed, Regent of the Betty Martin Chapter, said, “We are not political. We just are proud to be Americans, and that’s why we felt like this was such a worthy cause to bring back this tradition to Bell County.” Reed added, “Debbie Paye, DAR Chair for Consti- tution Week...she is actually at one of the elementary schools because Salado, Belton, and Temple ISD are participating as well. So, she’s around the flagpole with the youth. It was my honor to be here at the courthouse steps to call attention to everything.”
Lynsey Patrick, District Director for Hillary Hick- land, on behalf of Brad Buckley, State Representative, District 54, and Hillary Hickland, State Representative, District 55, presented a Resolution for Bells Across Amer- ica, signed by both State Representatives.
A member of DAR, Sandra Jones, attended the event “so I can secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our prosperity, which is in the Constitution...I love this country.”
In 1955, DAR petitioned for the national observance of Constitution Week to occur annually from Sept 17–23. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the resolution on August 2, 1956.
The Betty Martin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will continue the tradition of “Bells Across America” at the Bell County Courthouse. You can find out more about DAR at www.dar.org.
